Job Purpose

Development of high quality software which has been rigorously tested and is ready to be shipped

Key Responsibilities

  • Build quality products and champion best practice to other developers
    • Provide support and guidance as needed to other developers within the development team encouraging good practice agile development techniques
    • Advocate and follow good practice development techniques within the agile development team, by sharing their knowledge and skills
    • Apply and adhere to good practice software engineering practices (e.g. DRY principles, TDD and BDD, continuous integration, automated tests, pair programming, code reviews)
    • Ensure that they have a good understanding of each user story and the expected outcome, asking for further detail from the Product Analyst/Manager as required
  • Active involvement in Sprints
    • Active involvement in sprint planning sessions in order to breakdown the user story into sub-tasks
    • Active involvement in backlog refinement in validating the user stories and writing the BDD scenarios for each user story
    • Attend daily scrum stand ups and provide meaningful and relevant updates on development and any impediments that are impacting progress
    • Attend sprint review sessions to demo new/updated features that have been developed and provide detail on any issues that impacted completion
    • Attend sprint retrospectives and raise learnings with the Scrum Master and any actions that need to be taken within the next sprint
  • Take ownership of delivery and meeting the sprint goal (along with the wider development team) and providing regular updates on progress against commitment, and any impediments blocking development
    • Work collaboratively with the Product Owner/Analyst and Scrum Master to reach agreement on the commitment for the next sprint and the user stories that will be included
  • Provide support for releases including the production of release notes
  • Embed a culture of agile working and continuous improvement across own business area, encouraging simplicity, efficiency, ownership and accountability

Key Skills/Experience

  • Excellent knowledge of agile methodology and practices (Scrum, Kanban, XP)
  • Good understanding of agile development principles e.g. pair programming, code reviews
  • High level of proficiency with development, automated testing and deployment tools used by the Engineering function including: Java, JavaScript frameworks, Salesforce Commerce Cloud
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of software development including practices such as BDD, TDD, DRY principles, continuous integration, automated deployment
  • Knowledge of design and architecture concepts (i.e. microservices) and ability to apply knowledge within the development cycle
  • Knowledge of full release cycle within an agile environment and familiarity with using Jenkins
  • Proactive and self organised in delivery of work and an ability to take ownership for committed activities within a sprint and supporting release into production
  • Ability to provide regular and meaningful updates on progress with the right level of information
  • Good analytical skills and methodical approach to problem solving
  • Strong team working and collaboration skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to mentor and improve other Developers knowledge e.g. undertaking code reviews
