Job Purpose

Lead and manage and inspire a team of digital designers and copywriters to create the right content for Halfords digital channels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and implement the content strategy and vision for Halfords digital channels
  • Works closely with the data analysis, merchandising, digital marketing and UX teams to understand what the customer needs and wants to find on the website
  • Ensure that each content initiative is produced and published on time to a high level of quality
  • Ensure Halfords has engaging product and editorial content across channels, consistent with brand guidelines and tone of voice
  • Remain up to date and competent with latest tools and best practices in content production
  • Form a strong working relationships with the CRO, Data Analysis, SEO and Social Media teams to ensure that the content, tone and image of Halfords is:
  • consistent across the business
  • meet customers’ expectations
  • is shared on the right channels and easy to search for online
  • Ensure that designers and the copywriters have the right understanding of the business context and needs and that content is designed to align to this
  • Build and lead a motivated digital content team through empowering team members to take ownership of Halfords digital brand, encouraging development of skills and providing people with the right up-skilling opportunities
  • Act as a key point of escalation to help quickly remove technical, design, process or business process blockers preventing the teams from meeting their commitments
  • Remain aware of status of objectives and key issues across the teams to inform where additional focus or attention is required to help improve performance
  • Provide regular updates to the digital leadership team and key business stakeholders on new initiatives that can be shared on social network, drive conversion or generate new data analysis
  • Works closely with the SEO and Social Media teams to ensure that the content is shared on the right media and that the tone used is consistent for each brands on all channels
  • Ensure best possible service is provided remaining up to date with new thinking, good practices and trends
  • Build a network of trusted partners and suppliers, using them to provide insight and support as needed to help develop the digital content activities
  • Manage partners/suppliers that are providing a service to ensure it delivers against expectations
  • Manage contracts with partners/suppliers including contract renewal/negotiations and provision of additional value add services and advice)
  • As the new digital function is being established, ensure:
    - ways of working are defined, clear, are understood and are being consistently followed
    - new teams and role responsibilities are clear and embedded in day to day activity; through recruiting the right skills/people, providing coaching and guidance as needed, as well as required training and up-skilling

Line & Performance Management:

  • Sets individual objectives for team members that align to their development needs
  • Gathers and evaluates feedback on performance on a regular basis
  • Summarises feedback to focus on key strengths and development areas
  • Delivers feedback on regular basis (as needed)
  • Coaches and mentors team members in good practices
  • Manages personnel issues as they arise

Key Skills/Experience

  • Track record of managing a team of copywriters and digital designers
  • Very good stakeholder management and communication skills

  • Good delegation and coaching skills – highly comfortable in empowering individuals and development teams
  • Act quickly and decisively using good judgement in making decisions and performing actions
  • Strong business acumen and good level of commercial awareness
  • High attention to detail
  • Good at building business relationships internally and externally with partners and suppliers
  • Driven and motivated to create a high performing content team that adapts, develops and grows through continuous feedback and improvement
  • Passionate about digital products
